Under the
Moon: Drinking Alone
by T'ang poet Li
Po
Flowers all
around one pot of wine
Solitary drinking without a friend
I raise my cup to invite the bright moon
With my shadow we make three:
The moon - though it doesn't know how to dance
And my shadow - which can only follow me
For the moment I'll make do with moon and shadow
Enjoyment is fitting to the spring
I sing and the moon wavers to and fro
I dance and my shadow gets all mixed up
Sober we frolic together Drunk each goes his way alone
We three forever silent friends
Will meet some day in the clouds up above.
